I took Option #1 sometime around 2011. While I really enjoyed CX, BA, LH, JL, etc., I still flew UA because I am based in the Bay Area. When I passed 3 Million last year, I decided that with my level of travel, I could reach 4 Million by 2019 if I consolidated my travel. And, that's without doing MRs.

And, while I grumble from time to time, UA has always treated me pretty well. Lifetime GS would be good -- I hope UA doesn't roll back its 4 Mil Lifetime GS offer.
I'm sure it is "old hat" for most GS. Yesterday, I applied a couple of RPU's on a RT Cross Country (PS) flights (777HD - fare class G) scheduled for next week. The fare class available was J6 P1 PN0 (outbound) and J6 P2 PN0 (return). This morning both outbound and return flights had cleared. As a 1K, my upgrades would never have cleared, would have been #11 + on the Upgrade list and be sitting in HD Coach (ouch).

My sense of urgency to reach GS was largely based on the large disparity between United Lifetime program and Delta/American Lifetime programs. Both Delta and American top out at Platinum. As often mentioned, United tends to follow Delta's model/changes. In this one situation, I'm obviously pleased United has not made any changes.
