To the extent that junk mail subsidizes (indirectly) first class mail, what's the downside of getting too many mailers from Discover? I suppose the waste of paper is a real consideration, of course, but I don't think I see junk mail as an irritant. It takes moments to go through it and either toss it, or use it at the bottom of the birdcage, etc.
I opted out of prescreened offers so that if someone were to ever steal my mail, said thief wouldn't end up with a credit card application that they could use to steal my identity. Of course, BofA and Discover still mail me stuff anyway by virtue of having accounts with both.
