The problem I have had is that I get to the lifts and then other people follow in...with a delay as the doors then close and open a few times as more people rush to get on the lift��.So why I now always use the escalators as at least I feel more in control of my destiny in making the next flight. I accept it is a bit sad to have to think of such a strategy to make a tight connection to catch a plane...I am sure you are right that most times I would be better off waiting at the back of the lift!
