How to best leverage the 5% cards this year?
So I am trying to figure out the best way to leverage the 5%s for this year. I have Amazon Prime + card for constant 5%, I also have Discover IT in its first year so 10% in specific categories, the freedom card for 5% in specific categories, and the AMEX bluecash preferred for 6% at groceries. We also have a debit card which has a specific monthly use + spending requirement to get 2.5% on up to 25k I try to hit every month.
At this point my plan is to max discover in every category I can (unlikely to hit restaurants unless someone has a recommendation, we also only have a costco nearby no other wholesale option to my knowledge).
We use the AMEX card for most purchases at grocery stores (minus when it will be discover) but we also sometimes swap it with the debit to try and hit our minimums there.
For Chase I have signed us up for internet/cell but that will only be $480 for the quarter. We don't shop at many places other than costco or grocery store consistently enough that I think we will make any headway on samsung pay.
For Q1 my thoughts at this point are to max Discover buying 10% Amazon GCs at the gas station (I will confirm we get the 5% before major purchase) and use chase freedom for gas + bills which gets use under $1k, not sure if I will get the full 1500 here.
For Q2 use discover for grocery and finish off with amazon GC if I havent maxed it yet, otherwise if I max go back to AMEX and debit (who knows with Chase but this might be a wash here).
For Q3 really not sure since we dont eat out much
For Q4 make sure to max amazon before my 1 year bonus is up, refer wife to Discover card and repeat with her for a year.
So any thoughts on ways I can leverage this better?
Also few questions on these CCs in general:
1. For Discover, I am unable to find a link online in my account to track my quarterly spending by rewards, do they provide a way to easily track how much I have spent in each category and to confirm certain purchases hit the 5% CB I am expecting? I would assume so but I am missing this.
2. For AMEX, I actually have 2 cards and when I try to go to the rewards tracker (what I wish I could find on Discover) it is only showing my first account card (not the preferred) making it impossible for me to view my CB on the preferred, does anyone else have this issue?
3. Anyone else who leverages these % back cards, do you utilize the AMEX card? We received roughly $270 in CB this year so didn't meet the spending max but with the annual fee I am starting to wonder if this card is worth it. I get maybe 2-3 AMEX offers of use each year I use but overall am wondering if I am making the most efficient use of my CCs. Thoughts/comments are welcome.
thanks
