I think the real risk is that the perks will change as we see incremental takebacks every few years plus new fees etc. the BE fares are just the latest way to stiff elites. Eventually Gold will lose E+ at time of booking (see DL race to bottom) and Plats keep getting shafted with more fees...
I don’t see the goalposts moving - 4MM lifetime EQM on UA metal is pretty tough - heck I am not even 1MM yet and I’ve been flying UA/CO for 30+ years. FT kind of distorts the sampling. If anything AA was lot easier when they counted all miles including CC spend.
