Any SPG Gold is automatically a Marriott Gold. (well, once you link your accounts)

Whether Marriott will allow a subsequent challenge for Platinum is another matter. No idea, but I'm sure the Marriott board has better info...

That said, the OP should have no expectations of a suite upgrade. It's one of those areas where SPG over-promises and individual hotels under-deliver.
