I have checked out pretty thoroughly Inn at Roman Forum which has most of us very happy and that indeed may be the choice but begore throughly commiting still looking around.
I would not do that. Everyone is different and has different tastes, but that would be a bit of a nightmare. I get my haircuts right up the street, at the Hassler when in Rome (which will probably be this weekend.) Via Condotti is the premier shopping street in all of Rome, if not in all of Italy. Perhaps not, there are a few places in Milan that rival it.

It is good to window shop on Via Condotti, but it would be the most commercial, terrible place to stay. The Spanish Steps are a nice place to see. I have to walk down them after my haircuts. It's only because they restored them, and passed the new rule, "No picnics on the Spanish Steps." It's generally packed with teenagers sitting there, eating fast food and drinking beer. The new rule has eliminated that. There are now plenty of police.

Italy is about peace and calm, not staying next to a madhouse like the Spanish Steps. Via Condotti ends at the Spanish Steps. It's definitely a site to see, but not a place to stay.
