An update: it was not at all straightforward to determine whether the upgrade was 70,000 miles to upgrade... per passenger, per direction or both. It is indeed 70,000 per passenger, per direction (I guess you could choose to upgrade one direction and not the other). I still think it is a good fit for us... and over the phone Emirates was very helpful walking me through the dates of availability of the upgrades.
Any other contributions to offer with this additional info?
So, it is not quite the bargain I anticipated... but still pretty good, ... as I tend to view the "cost" of (earning or redeeming) miles. pricing the fare class differential (from economy to business class) is about between the upgrade value
