I'm having trouble reconciling what the agents told you with the T&Cs for GPUs on the website:
- Stopovers require multiple upgrade products. A stopover for a single, one-way trip within the U.S. or between the U.S. and Canada is defined as longer than 4 hours in the connecting city. A stopover for a single, one-way trip to or from all other destinations is defined as longer than 24 hours in the connecting city.
Since you're connecting to an international destination, it doesn't appear it should be defined as a stopover. If the RPU clears (and it should with the same priority as the GPU), you may want to call back after 5 or so days and talk to the Mileage Plus Service Center about having the RPU redeposited. I think it may be that once an instrument is applied, the res agents have trouble "extending" it to other segments, even if its a valid request. In those cases, I've used another instrument and always been able to get one redeposited after the trip. (My use cases were different - using miles domestically to upgrade and not wanting the shorter trip to clear before the longer one - but same concept).
