Without specifics on the itinerary it appears about $100-200 r/t fare difference between W & V is common. That will almost certainly be better than the end-on-end pricing.

But you'll also probably pay a change fee (technically this up-fare doesn't meet the GG BUYUP rules) and still no guarantee that it clears. I'd spend the $100 on a nicer dinner in LA or Bangkok, personally.

At one point UA stopped allowing the single instrument to apply over long (an arbitrary definition) layovers. That rule seems to come and go and is always unpublished when it is in place so who knows if that's a thing right now or not.
