If you do see a good sale, I'd purchase the sale ticket and then immediately cancel the first purchased ticket. You don't want to risk UA noticing the duplicate reservations/tickets and cancelling both. You could also phone UA to do the transaction and apply the credit from the more expensive ticket toward the sale price ticket, assuming that you see a sale and not a mistake fare.
