That's pretty much the reason why you can't "transfer" them. You can use it for another person, but YOU have to pay for the ticket. Otherwise I'm sure there would be "envelopes" being sold on eBay for $50 with $75 Alaska discount codes included "for free".

I have no idea. I booked tickets for someone using their credit card. They were inconvenienced. Since they didn't fly Alaska enough to use the code before it expired, they gave me the code. Tried using it on my own ticket paid for by me. "Sorry, can't use it, the person who got this code must either pay for or fly on the ticket" was the (paraphrased) message I got at booking. The people in question were not crediting to Alaska Airlines; they credited to BA.
