My my girlfriend and I spent three very enjoyable days in shanghai earlier this year. Some suggestions include:
1. Nanjing road and the bund for general sightseeing and shopping
2. Pudong. We enjoyed the museum in the basement of the pearl tower. Can’t remember what it was called
3. The marriage market in people’s park, if its on while she is there
4. Yuyuan gardens. Yes it’s busy and commercialized, but we enjoyed it. For me it was quite funny seeing a Dairy Queen inside an old temple looking building
5. AP plaza. This place is an absolute winner for me! More counterfeit stuff than you could ever imagine in the one place. Don’t be scared to go into the secret rooms, you’ll have to if you want the better fakes. Rule of thumb is to settle somewhere around 10-20% or original offer price.
6. French concession. Nice to go for a walk and escape some of the madness
I don't think people are anti-Shanghai in general, but rather the specific situation.
