Good info to have, thanks, but they should empower there customer service desk, especially at the 1K desk, to be a little more proactive in helping to solve some of these issues. Given they know of the overcrowding when you check in on line and have options to select how much money you will be willing to take to take a later flight, although this is the first time I have seen this feature when I check in, there should be alternatives to taking money like a re-route, when you call in, at least I think so.
From my experience this year, when there is an oversold flight at T=24hr, 9 times out of 10, the flight goes out with standbys taken or with empty seats. Most of the time, UA will only make these kinds of itinerary changes at the gate, and phone agents are directed to tell anyone inquiring about compensation or routing changes to handle it with the gate agent. Hopefully this is good information for you.... VDBs are hard to come by this year. Let us know what happens at the gate. I like having any data points posted in this thread.
