Did you phone call or did the gate agent tell you this? If you called into UA on the phone, they cannot do this for you. At the gate, they can do anything they want to alleviate the oversale, including sending you to an alternate airport if you so desire. Only at the gate can they do this for you. Give us some additional detail as to what happened here... the original post is a bit vague and leaves me to ask additional questions.
