Boy it would be a lot more comfortable flying through the air with a parachute instead of clamping on to a seat cushion!
As you alluded, there are normally two flotation devices, the inflatable vest under the seat, and the seat cushion you are sitting on. I've always wondered how bouyant a seat cushion would actualy be. And do the leather seat cushions in the F/C cabin float? Perhaps F/C passengers should get an extra floatation device?

But the fact remains, the concept of flotation devices is more a security blanket then a practical safety precaution.
