While the property will never acknowledge liability, it may well be more helpful as a customer service matter if keeping the cops out is in the cards.
I second this. In my case it was the arrival of the police that convinced the GM of the property to refund the stolen money to me, as a credit against my bill (without admitting liability of course). I am 100% convinced this was done to avoid the embarrassment of having the police question the staff.
