UA936 EWR-SFO on 15-Dec. Pax standing during taxiing!
Anyone else happen to be on UA 936 on Friday, 12/15/17, EWR-SFO?
Due to various reasons, UA 936 arrived at SFO 77 minutes late this past Friday. During our approach, the FA came on and made a polite request to all of the pax whose travel was terminating at SFO to remain seated upon landing, as there a number of people with tight or missed connections. Nothing terribly unusual about the request as I'm sure we've all heard it before.
Things got interesting as soon as we landed. The plane (777-200) landed and came to a stop, despite clearly not being anywhere close to the gate. As soon as it stopped, 4-5 people came rushing up to the door in between F and Y. (I was in 22A). They had their carry-ons in hand and just huddled near the galley. Almost immediately following, more and more pax started getting out of their seats and opening the overhead bins. The FA came on again instructing people to return to their seats, and said that they plane could not move until everyone was seated. As she was mid-sentence the plane started rolling, and it looked like a lot of other connecting pax took her instructions to be meaningless. Before long, there were 15-20 people and their bags standing in both aisles and in the galley while the plane was taxiing. 10-20 seconds later, the plane came to a stop somewhere on the pad, and the FO or Capt. came on sounding cool, calm and collected...but audibly upset. Something to the effect of "Ladies and gentlemen, I don't understand why people are standing in the cabin. I can't move the plane to the gate until you're all seated. I know we're late, but now you're just making everyone else late."
The Captain's message didn't seem to be very effective as the standees just kind of kept their heads down and pretended people didn't see them. Then the FA came on, clearly irritated, and starting citing FAA compliance issues regarding being seated while taxiing, as well as some personal anecdotes about the standees' poor behavior. It was not long before the people sitting in their seats started heckling them, with one individual yelling, "sit down you idiots!"
Eventually everyone returned to their seats, the plane made it to the gate, and we were all on our merry way. I'm sure this isn't the first time, and won't be the last time, that this situation crops up - but as someone who sees the rules of air travel in black and white, I was very satisfied with how the situation was handled.
