Worth mentioning that AA's international tariff (similar to a contract of carriage) still allows refunds or penalty-free changes (but not fare difference-free changes) due to equipment swaps. That may or may not be helpful depending on the alternatives. As such, whenever I buy up to a premium cabin, I screen shot the fare grid at the time of purchase so I can properly claim the compensation/refund for flying in a lower cabin than what I booked. I think it only happened to me once, somewhat of an unusual situation (I guess they often are), and of course it was also the one time I *didn't* take the screenshot (as we were booking under stress at 1am at JFK after being completely screwed by DL during their April meltdown).

But ExpertFlyer helped me identify the up-charge, and United actually gave the proper compensation anyway.
