It doesn't suit you, but it suits BA, their loyal customers, and those paying a lot for a ticket near the travel date.
Think of it as levelling the playing field a little.
Which it's perhaps fair to add that on BA the CW seating is very different. I have limited business flying experience, but on Finnair's A350 to Helsinki, and various AA transatlantic flights I wouldn't care which seat I got, they're all much of a much. However on BA there are definite good and bad (less good) seats, so seat choice is much more important. 62K all the way
