FWIW I rather like the policy as it allows late bookers to still score good seats. Same goes for the seat reservation in ET. Unless you fly a route with a high number of frequent flyers you can get an exit row seat fairly easy.
I actually do like it too, but I did wonder when I saw that the premium seat on Norwegian had free seat selection if anyone else did it. In a way it might work, paid seat selection will have far more available seats on checkin than other free seat selection, so you might get some decent seats out of it anyway.
Fair point about some seats being a lot better than others, if you like travelling backwards, but not quite the same in WT+. Though couldn't get away with WT+ seat selection free, when J is paid.
