Not quite the same concept—RPU's are applied to 'trips' do not have any distance component to their applicability, but e500's were good only for 500 mile segments each.
So in the LAX - EWR - ... - SNA example if the layovers are short enough it's one trip and covered by one RPU, but SFO - JFK - LAX is approx. 5000 miles and should have required 10 e500's.
