+1. Gifted Gold to my wife last year. She flew 4 paid OW flights (plus a bunch of award flights), i.e. nowhere near qualifying for anything, but just received a Silver card for next year. Well, until the next gifted Gold anyway — saving that until her next flight so that we maximize the benefit duration.
