Risk is a personal thing, and there is no right answer. For me I would be OK with this so long as the airline involved was reliable and had a good on-time reputation. I would just check what other options I would have to get to OAK before 15:00 hrs, if something went wrong, e.g. paying on the day to go on another service. If I was someone very risk adverse I'd make a virtue of being in the San Francisco area on the day of departure, instead of being in LA.

Thanks for the welcome corp! I'm hoping for a Jan BA sale to give me reason to be around on this forum more too haha.
Thanks all for the advice, helped a lot - I decided to go in the morning, taking the 6:30 departure on AA: LAX - SFO, then using public tranport to OAK.
There are two more safe departures on AA after that one, and getting no sleep (after a night out) will help me readjust to the UK, if I can sleep on the plane.
