I've been doing this for all of 2017 because of the earnings rules in place for the year. Elite benefits worked better too. Usually PDX-LAX on an AS ticket, the LAX-XXX on an AA ticket. No misconnects so far [fingers crossed], though not being protected has caused some occasional anxiety.
