That's the problem. There are 1 1/2 Canadian national carriers, as there are 1 1/2 Australian national carriers. When the big carrier is locked up, one does the best one can. In Canada, that means a deal with WestJet. Some elite benefit reciprocity is better than just codesharing.
True but WS is working hard to go from a 0.5 to a 1.0 airline. Despite their name, they now have a coast-to-coast operation and they are about to bring flat-bed 787s online. This deal with DL is a big part of their plan to become a major airline. At the same time, DL badly needs a Canadian partner. To me, this is a real win-win
