I think VX and AA were about the same size in 2016 based on SFO's 2016 report. VX + AS is probably larger than AA once the operation is combined, but nothing significant.
Makes sense. The point is that AA had no reason to be completely uncaring about AS going from an airline that had strong presences in markets AA was weak in (SEA/PDX/ANC) where being fairly close partners was an advantage, to ones where AA is strong in (SFO/LAX), where AS now becomes a competitive threat, just like UA, B6, DL and WN.
