You are right in that points change with the cost of the flight. However, points reservations are fully refundable and can provide great value in that respect if you need a refundable flight. They are also great if you plan ahead of time. You can make your flight reservation when you first know your plans and constantly check back to make sure you get the lowest price. You can also lock in a low fare ahead of time for a flight you might take.
This. Fully, immediately refundable flights. I use it to reserve flights months ahead for kids, grandkids - summer/winter vacation.
