...but if the award is available for 5,000 points the flight may well be offered for less money than the flight taken to get the award in the first place. If the “dream” is to get a cheap award to California just wait for a sale and buy your flight to California. Spending more on a flight you don’t need to get a small bonus is not rational.

If you were 5,000 miles short of an International first class award, that is different but if you are hoping for an award on a flight you could have purchased outright for $59, your plan makes no sense at all.
