Marriott Gold is 50 nights a year (but has better benefits). WoH Explorist is only 30 (but the benefits are more "meh"). Marriott has better reach and maybe better low-end options for points, Hyatt has better aspirational travel options (but if you're doing family travel you might be better served by cheap awards for a Courtyard in the right spot than a Park Hyatt not near the right spot).

I've picked the "more options vs. better aspirational options" end of things by going with Hilton instead of Hyatt (and Hilton status is way easier to keep than Marriott status for not-so-frequent travel), but I could see someone choosing differently.
