No, we were just happy to have a more direct (2 legs vs original 3 legs) return.

In hindsight, we should not have. Rookie mistake.

How was the trip rescheduled? Did you return directly to the mainland without an interisland flight?
Yes, to SFO and then to RNO.

When you got the refund, did not it seem larger than expected -- E+ access is a fraction of the full flight cost.
Being on vacation I did not pay enough attention to the UA reply. You are correct that the size of the refund should have raised a flag.

Trying to understand how things got confused and the trip was refunded.
Clearly we could have handled things better. Hope the above helps explain what happened.
