The AA aircraft “boneyard” at ROW / Roswell, NM
I know airlines store planes in the desert for various reasons - retirement, temporary due to economic conditions, parts scavenging, resale, etc. I was just surprised when looking at airfleets.net that AA has 95 757's in dessert storage. Unless fuel becomes super cheap, there's little reason to believe these will ever fly with AA colors again in accordance with the longer term fleet plan. The "history" column shows 44 additional 757's that have been transferred and it's interesting to see the next registrants. I thought FedEx and other freighters love the 757, so I'm surprised there is such a glut of them going back to 2012 when they started retiring them (FedEx did take all the MD-11's and some DC10's). Is there really no 2nd hand market any more for this plane?
Also of minor note are the 264 MD8x/9x, which are, on average, older and have a lesser appeal than the 757 for a lot of missions.
