I booked accommodation on the CZ website 3 days ago for a trip in April with no difficulties at all. Travelling on a NZ passport.

Seems you no longer can request a transit hotel online. Called China Southern and been told foreign nationals will be given hotel vouchers AT the airport only, as officials don't give out stopover visas anymore so easily (should be over many hours & no Turkey stamps in passport).
