Unofrtunately there's not much you can do about it. You are not entitled to the free seat unless purchased in advance. What you could have done is moved next to your girlfriend and given the guy the aisle/window. The purser was correct, if you want to have a guaranteed free seat in between you, you'll have to purchase it.
