Slightly at a tangent, it's also worth joining Avis Preferred [FREE], which speeds up on-airport processes enormously.

I missed an email once at IAD which said:
Your Red KIA SPORTAGE 4WD is ready. Go to parking space B17 in our Avis Preferred® area. (License plate # (NY) HDE4478; Rental Agreement # 123456789).
Your rental document will be ready at the exit gate (because we're paperless now). Just show the agent your driver's license.
