google maps consistently overestimates transit times

As in, if you look at their public transit options, they always give exorbitant times. Possibly to push customers to taking Uber, which they get paid for advertising (or another service, depending where you are).
I was taking the subway, which was 4 minutes on one line and then 5 minutes on another. The wait times were up to 5 minutes for each line (as in trains come every 5 minutes). Even if you added it all up, with the longest possible waits, it still wouldn't make "32 minutes" which is what they said.

I understand public transit is uncertain. But so is any form of transit, as there could be delays/traffic/etc.

Are there other apps for public transit that are meaningful? Because google maps' times for public transit are so outrageously wrong that I don't bother to use their estimates anymore.
