Agree and I don't have the answer.
Perhaps some of us are more inclined to consider the need to look into the details before travel. The Canadian Government has an excellent travel section where not only can you select your destination, but it provides info on visas, safety/security recommendations and health topics (eg. need for yellow fever shots and so on). The U.S. site is informative to a certain extent, so if I am heading somewhere I have never been, I check those plus the country's own sites. Also, some have specific pages for citizens of certain countries, or some have detailed lists of which passport holders do not require visas or ETAs.
I can't tell you how many people I meet who have no idea about the Australian ETA and perhaps I'm wrong, but I blame 2 things: being clueless and/or lazy and the ability to buy tickets for travel online where not all (if any) OTAs offer info in the way TAs used to, when booking tickets or other travel.
