Apart from 50% of Africa, most of the Middle East, West Asia, China, Russia.. 44 countries in total (I believe) - so more than 20% of the entire world. 20% of the world does not refer only to "godforsaken places".
I agree, once would expect that you could get into Australia on arrival... but I would still check (not to mention, Australia is renowned for its immigration policies... did anyone from the UK not hear that 2 million times during Brexit?!
