Conversely, should you not present yourself for the Milan flight, your return would become your problem, not BA's.

Yes that is precisely it. My concern is the fact that in the multi-city booking option when adding the flights I can't search for flights YVR-BCN but need to search separately for YVR-LHR and LHR-BCN (same issue on return from Milan). I just want to make sure I'd be protected at the Heathrow connections (makes sense that I wouldn't be in between BCN and Milan).
