I don't think that's true. My fee posted just before my last vacation. It was actually paid through autopay during my vacation.
When I used the web site chat function on monday to cancel, I was told my card was eligible for retention offers. I did not call to find out what they were - the retention department was closed at that time - and just closed my account.
