To clarify one thing here.... There is no way that pilots would be able to know if the airline was short staffed or not.. Not like they can see each others schedules. What they would have seen is this:
Shoot, I got booked flights on 12/23 and 12/25, oh but I can drop both of them! I'll do that.
So, essentially every pilot did what a normal person would do, and elected to not work on Christmas. The airline would be the one to notice that they are not staffed for the flights.
Now, the airline needs to staff the flights. Obviously, pilots may have made their own plans already. We'll see what the solution will be, but knowing the leverage the pilots have here, it's going to need to be a lot more than 150% pay.
