I did ask and was was told that as the original flight was not direct the new flight had to be the same. When I asked about the cost of switching to direct I was quote the $2kAUD figure.
This is why agent roulette is a thing. Since they were forcing the change, they can be a lot nicer than if you decided on your own to make the change.
