To update: AS representative actually called me back later today, and said that she didn't feel it was the right thing to not be able to accommodate this, and had spoken to a "higher up" after the call and that they were making the change to rebook me from the cancelled AA flight onto AS as requested.

I'm glad it worked out and appreciate the service / perseverance from the AS partner award desk representative that I spoke with.
