I would not be at all confident that this would actually work. I suspect the fact that it is an award ticket nullifies the eligibility of the preferred seat purchase to earn MQD's. This statement in the MQD T&C's prefaces the other sections --

"Award, free, barter, pass travel and other tickets not eligible for mileage accrual will not earn MQDs."
