This is the best possible advice for the OP.

I would add to it just one thing, because we all like knowing we're not getting ripped off . The OP should do some research on what good and average prices are for tickets to his destination. Then, as suggested, you'll know when the fare is "acceptable" and can pull the trigger right away.

I've found great fares 3 weeks out, and also 9 months out. The keys are knowing the market price, diligently checking for fare changes before you purchase, and if possible being flexible on the days you can travel.
