Valet check tags are red and mean they'll bring your bag up to the jetbridge. Gate check tags are yellow and go to baggage claim.

First time I got a valet tag was at the end of boarding with no additional overhead space (I was in F). When I landed, I waited on the bridge for my bag but was told by an FA that they would be delivered to baggage claim. Sure enough, I'd gotten bad info and my bag was nowhere to be found. Apparently it'd been left on the bridge and then reloaded on another flight. Took about a day but AA delivered it and all ended well but now I know!
