My business partner used to order "bone dry" martinis. One day I asked him about it. After some conversation, he saw the logic in what I was saying and changed his usual to straight gin, shaken with ice and served in a martini glass.
Never understood the 'shaken' part unless you're starting with a high alcohol content booze which you want to water down. I've ordered martinis in this way on occasion but have also met incredulity from servers on occasion, especially in Asia.
