I see it more as an airport issue in that they aren't set up well for these arrangements.
USA is also no fun for international to domestic transit (e.g. QF SYD-LAX-JFK).
Over time I expect more such flights due to Chinese airline expansion of international service. Hopefully eventually the airport infrastructure is updated to better cater for these flights.
