I think the problem begins when trying to apply one's own valuing system to someone else.
For one person, a taxi represents only the means to get from one place to another. For another person, the taxi is a haven of privacy. The value of that taxi ride will be wildly different for those two.
And you can apply that same concept to virtually any good or service that's available for purchase.
So if someone pays $400 for a taxi, a hotel room, or a pair of tailored undershorts, and someone else says s/he "doesn't see the value" in such a purchase, it strikes me as a commentary on the latter far more than the former.
