Despite showing them the website and a number of calls to ticketing wouldn’t budge. They have to go off their IT system not the advertised value on their public website.
So I wrote to Etihad Guest about the failed upgrade attempt above and got the following response:

This is with reference to your feedback pertaining to airport upgrade values.
I regret the disappointment caused with regards to the discrepancy in mileage values for the instant upgrade.
As mentioned in the terms and conditions on the website, instant upgrades performed at the airport will be calculated at the time of request based on the fare class booked.
Hence, the values provided by the website Mileage Calculator is only applicable for upgrades done via the Contact Centre prior to your travel.
The instant upgrade values quoted at the airport is based on a different mileage calculator and the miles quoted is inclusive of the 50% discount. -----
Question is how do they calculate the value and how do we know there are not just making it up on the fly, how can anyone make a considered judgement on whether to proceed with the UG if they have no idea what the amount will be?? Is it the same every-time or does the value change depending on day of the week, time of departure & load? It would be good to know, but as usual with Etihad their website isn't really cutting the mustard!!
For a 1 way AUH-LHR UG 170,000+ miles seems
A LOT from U to I when compared with the quoted value of 52414 prior to checkin at airport. For that many miles you can get a Business Class Guest seat return to New York!!!
In the past what instant miles UG amounts have other FT members been quoted/paid at the airport?
